The book of Romans tells us “Never be lacking in zeal but keep your spiritual fervour, serving the Lord” (Romans 12:11). The word ‘fervour’ in the Greek is ‘dzeh-o’, which carries the meaning of something red hot, boiling and bubbling over. There are many things we can be fervent about that are not necessarily sin but are wrong passions. Jesus, however, was consumed by love for us, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10).

The fact is very clear - Jesus’ passion was wrapped around his purpose. The greatest tragedy in life is not death but living without a purpose. Jesus laid down His life in order to fulfil His purpose. Without passion for our purpose we can become unfulfilled and generally unhappy about life, Church and God.
